But from Saturday those restrictions fall away, with a Crown spokeswoman confirming the casino and gaming floor restaurants would re-open from 6am. Melbourne and Perth’s Crown Casinos have effectively closed following the government’s announcements of a lockdown on non-essential services. Scott Morrison on Sunday night said all cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, casinos, gyms and places of worship were to close in response to the coronavirus crisis.

Evidence presented at the NSW Casino Inquiry should lead to the immediate suspension of operation at the Melbourne and Perth Crown casinos.

The NSW inquiry was told by Counsel assisting, Adam Bell SC, that the Crown group was not a “suitable person” to hold the licence to its new $2.2bn casino at Barangaroo, and that Crown Resorts is not a suitable person to be a close associate of the licensee.

“If Crown is not fit and proper to hold a casino licence in NSW, how can Crown be trusted to run a casino anywhere in Australia?” Mr Wilkie asked.

“Let’s not forget, the evidence used to recommend against the NSW licence was based on how Crown currently runs Crown Melbourne and Crown Perth.”

Video of money laundering taking place at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, as well as video-taped evidence from Crown employees of other serious misconduct and criminality, was initially revealed by Mr Wilkie in Federal Parliament. It subsequently formed part of the compelling evidence at the NSW Casino Inquiry.

Mr Wilkie commended the brave whistleblowers who came forward because they were deeply concerned about the conduct of Crown.

“Without these brave people, the truth about Crown’s conduct may never have come to light,” Mr Wilkie said.

Mr Wilkie called on the Victorian and NSW Premiers to suspend activities at both casinos immediately.

“An immediate suspension is particularly important in Victoria where the regulator, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, has failed disgracefully to do its job,” Mr Wilkie said.

“The VCGLR has allowed criminality and money laundering to flourish at Melbourne’s Crown Casino.”

Crown Sydney was due to open in next month. But it’s unclear whether this will now happen.

Crown Casinos enjoy ‘exemptions’ to remain open in Melbourne and Perth

Despite advice that casinos and poker machine venues around the country should be closed to slow the Coronavirus outbreak, the Melbourne and Perth casinos operated by Crown Resorts continue to operate, enjoying exemptions from health authorities in each state.

The casinos have each reportedly been deemed an ‘essential service’, exempted from restrictions on social gatherings.

Both venues have closed every second poker machine, but restaurants and high-roller rooms remain open - although patronage at the high-roller rooms is understood to have been dramatically cut by international travel bans.

Crown today advised that said it would reduce the number of people allowed at any one time in its restaurants from 450, a number set only on Monday, to 100.

However, a group of public health experts led by Monash University Associate Professor Charles Livingstone have written a letter to state health ministers and Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt calling for all poker machine venues to be closed to slow the transmission of Coronavirus.

Associate Professor Livingstone, a sociologist and gambling researcher who has long been a critic of Crown, said about 1,400 poker machines remain operational at the Melbourne casino.

The told Guardian Australia that poker machine buttons and screens were “sweaty, stinky and pretty horrible”, going on to advise “the capacity of Crown to wipe down machines between users is virtually impossible.

“Crown should be shut down now and so should all the pokie joints.”

In the USA, casinos in Nevada have reportedly closed down, while Australia’s casinos continue to operate.

Crown’s Australian casinos employ 18,500 people, and their closure would severely impact employment in Perth and Melbourne at a time when many hospitality and tourism staff are already being laid off due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Guardian Australia reported that Crown is allowed to keep operating in Victoria under an exemption provided by Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Brett Sutton.
